The Linux Foundation has launched the x402 Foundation, a new industry group that will oversee the x402 payment protocol, an open standard designed to let AI agents, applications, and APIs pay for digital services directly over HTTP.
Originally developed by Coinbase, x402 embeds payment handling into normal web interactions. Instead of sending users or agents through separate checkout pages or billing systems, the protocol lets software negotiate and complete payments as part of a standard request. It is designed to support a range of payment types, including traditional cards and stablecoins.
Why This Matters
The new foundation comes at a time when AI agents are becoming more deeply integrated into business software and cloud platforms. Many of these systems need to call APIs, access third-party services, or complete tasks on behalf of users, which creates a need for a native way to pay for digital services.
Jim Zemlin, CEO of the Linux Foundation, said AI agents and automated systems are already acting as participants in the global economy, but they still lack a secure, native mechanism for transactions. The foundation, he said, is intended to keep the payment layer open, interoperable, and neutral.
Big Industry Support
Forty organizations have joined the x402 Foundation since the Linux Foundation first announced the project in April. The membership list includes major names from cloud, payments, and financial services, such as AWS, Google, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, American Express, Cloudflare, Coinbase, Fiserv, Ripple, and Shopify.
That broad support suggests x402 is being treated as more than a niche crypto experiment. Instead, it is being positioned as a common payment layer for agentic commerce, digital services, and machine-to-machine transactions.
How x402 Works
x402 is built around the long-unused HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code. The idea is simple: if a request needs to be paid for, the server can respond with 402 and the client can complete payment before retrying.
The protocol is intended for paid APIs, cloud services, digital content, AI services, and other online resources that need immediate payment. Developers currently rely on subscriptions, prepaid credits, API keys, or account-based billing, but x402 aims to standardize payment directly inside the HTTP exchange.
Governance and Ecosystem
Under Linux Foundation governance, the x402 Foundation will serve as a neutral home where developers, banks, cloud vendors, and payment providers can shape the protocol together. The goal is to keep the system adaptable, secure, and free from vendor lock-in.
The move also reflects growing interest in payment-enabled AI systems. In May, AWS introduced Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments in preview, using x402 to let AI agents pay for APIs, MCP servers, web content, and other services while handling wallet authentication, spending controls, and transaction logs.
