Microsoft is accelerating how quickly it ships stable versions of Visual Studio Code, moving from a monthly to a weekly release schedule.

Until now, VS Code has received a new stable build roughly once a month, typically followed by three or four minor patches that deliver fixes and incremental features. Starting March 9, however, stable updates will be published every week, according to an announcement on GitHub. Visual Studio Code is a free, cross‑platform source code editor for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Raspberry Pi OS, with built‑in support for JavaScript, TypeScript, and Node.js, plus an extensive ecosystem of extensions for many other programming languages and tools.

The community response so far has been cautiously positive. Many developers welcome the more predictable and frequent cadence, but some have voiced concerns about potential trade‑offs in quality and stability. One user worried that faster shipping might mean less testing and fewer opportunities to provide feedback, while another pointed out that a weekly schedule could leave teams supporting a broader mix of versions in the field.

This shift comes on the heels of the most recent monthly release, Visual Studio Code 1.109, which delivered a range of improvements for coding agents. That update focused on optimization, extensibility, security, and session management, hinting at Microsoft’s broader effort to tighten the feedback loop between new AI‑powered features and developer workflows.
